Dr Clark is a Consultant Interventional Nephrologist and Physician, and is Clinical Lead for Nephrology at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, UK. Dr Clark graduated from Leicester Medical School, UK in 2008, completed specialty training in Nephrology and General Internal Medicine in the North East of England in 2017, and undertook Interventional Nephrology training at the Barnes Jewish Hospital and St Luke’s Vascular Access Centre in St Louis, USA in 2018. He was appointed to the role of Consultant Nephrologist at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust in April 2018, and became Clinical Lead for Nephrology in 2019. Dr Clark set up the Sunderland Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology Service – a unique model of care in the UK, in which nephrologists (rather than a combination of radiologists and surgeons) provide a day case service and perform a comprehensive range of procedures that patients require for the diagnosis of renal disease and the maintenance of dialysis access. These include point of care ultrasound, renal biopsies, tunnelled haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion and exchange procedures, and endovascular arteriovenous fistula interventions. This has transformed patient experience and helped to achieve a significant improvement in rates of definitive dialysis access.
